Qatar has embarked on an ambitious investment and development programme through which it is investing over $140 billion in all sectors of its economy. It is also acquiring assets overseas to “future proof” its economy against unexpected variations in the price of hydrocarbons.
Its progressive approach to the nation’s future is founded on the commitment to create a modern, industrialized and sustainable knowledge-based economy. While Qatar’s huge natural gas reserves and the expansion of its production of liquefied natural gas, petrochemicals and condensates production will continue to underpin the country’s wealth in the short to medium term, a programme of economic liberalization and diversification is also being introduced to create a more broadly based economy in future.
These major investments will grow Qatar's GDP, which has already reached $80 billion, and lay a strong foundation for a regional capital market, develop world class human resources and provide top-tier services to institutions and individuals.
Development of the financial market and financial services sector are being driven by the QFC, which provides financial institutions with a world class financial and business platform situated in an economy founded on the development of its hydrocarbons resources. The QFC has been created with a long term perspective to support the development of Qatar and the wider region, develop local and regional markets, and strengthen the links between the energy based economies and global financial markets.
The business opportunities in Qatar and the region are not short term. The Qatari financial market and financial services sector will continue to develop rapidly over the next few years, driven by large-scale investment. Apart from Qatar itself, the QFC also provides a conduit for financial services providers to access nearly $1 trillion of investment in the rapidly growing financial markets across the GCC as a whole over the next decade.
